Course Description
Five days in the city of Galileo, the Medicis and Michelangelo. This trip has a focus on both the arts of the Renaissance and modern street art. The goals of the trip include developing an understanding of the role of the arts in Renaissance Florence, the ways in which history has affected modern arts and the similarities and differences that exist between Italian cities. In Pisa we will visit the Field of Miracles to see the stunning cathedral where Galileo came up with the idea of the pendulum for measuring time. We will also climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa and figure out why it leans and if we should be worried. Finally, we will spend some time exploring the beautiful Tuscan town of Lucca, cycling along the city walls.

Learning Goals
- Engage in inquiry based activities to learn about such great artists as Botticelli, Michelangelo and Gentileschi.
- Use science to explain the arts. For example, Brunelleschi’s dome, why sculpture was done the way it was and how art has been preserved.
- Reflect on the nature of beauty in art.
- Learn to identify Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian archetypes in art.
- Compare and contrast the cities of Florence, Lucca & Pisa.
- Working together to prepare an Italian meal.
ISP Mission Links
- Inspiring learners for life. It is all about asking questions, enjoying experiences and exploring the arts to draw one's own conclusions.
- Healthy, fulfilling and purposeful. An exploration of beauty is all about what is fulfilling and purposeful to us. Reliance on one another both in learning and exploring the cities helps us to develop a sense of community that is both healthy and fulfilling. Getting some exercise cycling around the city walls of Lucca.
- Work Cooperatively and Independently. There will be several activities that require cooperation - from presentations in the museums to exploring the cities of Florence and Pisa to preparing an Italian meal.
- Acting with Integrity, Respect and inter-cultural understanding Whenever we engage with another culture, we are challenged with what what we consider the way things should be done. Exploring the past, we develop a sense of respect for the accomplishments of the Renaissance artists and scientists, as well as the heroes of the Second World War.
- An authentic global education within a nurturing student-centered environment. This is a hands-on approach to learning about the Renaissance while at the same time understanding "real Italy." Students also play a role in decision making during the trip. Reflection on our own learning takes place on a daily basis as we share meals and discuss what we have done and what lies ahead.
